GAS PRESSURE TESTING
Why a Gas Line Pressure Test Is the Step Between You and Hot Water
A gas line pressure test proves that the piping between your meter and your appliances holds pressure with no loss. SoCalGas will not set or relight a meter until the house line has passed and the city has released it, so the test is the one step between a cold house and working gas. Suburban Plumbing performs gas pressure testing across Orange County under California C-36 license #833520, documents the result for the inspector, and repairs anything the gauge turns up.
A test gauge on a gas line during a pressure test. Orange County residential tests hold at 10 psi for 15 minutes with no movement on the needle.
When Orange County Requires a Gas Pressure Test
- The meter has been off or locked: a vacant home, an escrow turnover, a shutoff, or a SoCalGas hazard tag.
- New or altered piping: a remodel, a tankless water heater, a new range, dryer, fire pit, or BBQ island.
- After a leak repair, before the line goes back into service.
- An inspector or SoCalGas technician has written up the line and wants a documented test.
- Pre-purchase checks on older Westminster, Garden Grove, and Huntington Beach homes.

What We Do on a Gas Line Pressure Test
We close every appliance valve, isolate the house line at the meter, and cap open outlets. A calibrated gauge goes on the line and the system is pumped to test pressure with air, never gas. Then it sits while we watch the needle. If it drops, we soap the joints, find the leak, repair it, and run the gas line pressure test again until it holds. Where the city requires a permit, we pull it at cost and meet the inspector on site. The passing test and the city release are what SoCalGas needs to schedule your turn-on.
The Numbers That Matter Here
Under California Plumbing Code section 1213.3, a residential gas line pressure test runs at 10 psi, held at least 15 minutes, with zero movement on the gauge. Most Orange County cities also require it whenever a meter has been off six months or more, not just when pipe is new. SoCalGas delivers gas to your house line at about one third of a psi, which is why a 10 psi test finds leaks no nose ever would. One more number for winter: the SoCalGas service guidebook warns that from November through February, meter set and turn-on waits can run more than 20 business days. Passing on the first visit matters a lot more in January than in June.
Before You Call
If you smell gas, leave the building first, then call SoCalGas from outside and us second. For a scheduled test, have the meter and every appliance reachable, pets secured, and any city notice or SoCalGas tag handy so we know what the inspector wants to see. Permitted gas pressure testing cannot be promised same day because the inspection sits on the city’s calendar. Gas water heater lines are covered under our water heater services; every other gas and plumbing repair is on our plumbing services page.
Call (714) 922-3555 and a real person answers, not a phone tree. Same-day service is often possible when you call early, and a line that has failed inspection moves to the front of the dispatch line. Suburban Plumbing has tested, repaired, and installed gas lines across Orange County since 2004, with flat-rate pricing agreed before any work starts.
